The Speedmaster Chronoscope is a modern watch with a touch of vintage flair. The latest addition to the collection, the Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope Paris 2024, showcases all that is great in such a balanced recipe.
A silvery white opaline dial with three dark grey timing scales in a 1940s “snail” design connect the two new references — one in all-stainless steel and the other in all 18K Moonshine™ Gold. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “chronoscope” as “an instrument for the precise measurement of small time intervals” — and Omega’s take stays true to its name. Together with the bezel, the Chronoscope offers three measurements, beyond displaying the time and functioning as a regular chronograph, of course.
The bezel is your tachymeter scale, which can be used to measure average speed — or, actually, any average performance, like that of a machine or conveyor belt — on an hourly scale. The dial’s telemeter is a scale used to measure the distance separating an observer from a phenomenon that is first visible and then audible, with our favourite example being lightning and its thunder. Last, we have the pulsometer, or pulsation scale, to measure one’s pulse. To use any of these, the wearer will start the chronograph and stop at the appropriate time, then read the measurement from the required scale. Watches like this were used as instruments by doctors and engineers for the better half of the 20th century so their functionality is unquestionable — even if they have largely been replaced by digital alternatives since then that are a lot less romantic and fulfilling to use.
The Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope Paris 2024 watch is powered by the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9908 in the steel and the 9909 in the gold versions, where the latter features a golden balance bridge in lieu of a rhodium silver one in the steel-cased reference. Both watches have solid casebacks, asserting Omega’s connection with the Olympic Games with a stamped medallion crafted with a mirror-polished Paris 2024 logo over a frosted base along with the stamped words “Paris 2024” and the Olympic Rings.
Whereas the dial radiates with vintage elegance, the case is a much more modern 43mm-wide, with an anodized aluminium bezel insert on the steel version and a ceramic bezel insert on the 18K Moonshine™ Gold variant. Watch enthusiasts will spot a vintage detail here, too, with the bracelet’s design and especially how its end-links are rather narrowly proportioned to the robust lugs. We think this is retro watch design done well, where you get to enjoy the benefits of modern design and quality of execution with the elevated and cunning elegance that some say only old-school watches can exhibit.
