Jaeger-LeCoultre 101 Secrets: Two Butterflies and 904 Diamonds

101 SECRETS WATCH Jaeger-LeCoultre

Jaeger-LeCoultre's new 101 Secrets is a bracelet first and a watch second, and that is entirely the point.

Look at it on the wrist, and you see a double river of pink sapphires, 124 of them, graduated from a deep cyclamen at the centre to a blush so pale it almost reads as white. Between the two rows runs a band of grain-set diamonds, 904 in all, which continues along the case sides and around the bezel. Nothing about it announces that it tells the time. Press a hidden button at six o'clock, one whose location only the wearer knows, and a section of the bracelet swings open like a book to reveal a small mother-of-pearl dial. Let go, and it closes again. The time disappears back into the stones.

What makes the Jaeger-LeCoultre 101 Secrets so special?

The idea is not new, and Jaeger-LeCoultre is honest about that. Secret watches date from the mid-twentieth century, when a woman of a certain standing was not expected to check the hour with any urgency. A hinged cover over the dial made the watch discreet and, more usefully for the jewellers, gave them an uninterrupted surface to work on. The 101 Secrets picks up that thread rather than reinventing it.

What makes the thing possible is the movement inside. Calibre 101 dates from 1929 and remains the smallest rectangular manually wound mechanical movement in the world. It measures 14 mm by 4.8 mm by 3.4 mm and weighs roughly one gram. The Manufacture likes to say that is the weight of two butterflies, which is the kind of line you forgive because it happens to be accurate. It grew out of the Duoplan of 1925, a two-level architecture that stacked the escapement on one plane and the barrel and gear train on another, halving the footprint of a conventional calibre. The original had 74 parts and was built without CAD, laser cutting or CNC machining, none of which would exist for another half century.

The current version, the fifth generation, has 98 components. Each one is custom-made and adjusted by hand because at this scale there is no other way. A handful of watchmakers in a dedicated atelier assemble them, and one movement takes about 40 hours. Output is a few dozen a year. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour with a 33-hour power reserve, which is modest, but nobody buys this for the reserve.

The gem-setting alone took 163 hours in the Métiers Rares atelier. The sapphires come in ten sizes and seven shades and are claw-set so light passes through them rather than bouncing off. That is where the colour comes from. The diamonds are grain-set, which sits them lower and lets the pink do the talking. The case is 18k pink gold, 29.07 mm by 12.22 mm, and the bracelet is sized for a 160 mm wrist, so this was made with a specific kind of arm in mind. A second concealed mechanism handles the clasp.

It is easy to be cynical about high jewellery watches, and often the cynicism is earned. This one is harder to dismiss because the mechanism underneath is a piece of horological history rather than a footnote. The whole object is built around a rather elegant refusal to show off the one thing a watch is supposed to show. Time, kept quietly. Jaeger-LeCoultre has been doing that for nearly a century, and it still does it better than most. We love it because, for once, the bracelet is the point and the watch is the reward.
