Future collectible? The first solid 18ct gold Tudor with an open case back.
Two major firsts debut with the 2021 Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18k: the first Tudor watch with a case crafted from solid 18ct yellow gold combined with a so-called open case back, i.e. a case back that allows one to appreciate the manufacture movement through a sapphire crystal back.
The Black Bay Fifty-Eight has been an absolute hit and an instant classic for Tudor: with its ageless proportions it successfully connects vintage dive watch design elements with the stylistic requirements of today and tomorrow. Specifically, that means a highly legible dial with large and highly contrasting hour markers rendered in simple geometrical shapes – triangles, rectangles and circles – and a case that is “only” 39 millimetres wide – at least a few millimetres smaller than the passing trend of large watches have dictated for the last decade or so. The domed dial plays in green, dare we say, money green, which is a superb match for the rich 18ct hues of the solid gold exterior. The golden texts, hands and hour marker surrounds really do complete the picture.
The restrained case size not only means timeless appeal – something to consider when going for a solid gold watch –, but also greater long-term wearing comfort. Despite the precious metal exterior, the most expensive rendition of the Black Bay Fifty-Eight to date maintains the 200-metre water resistance rating that characterizes the greater collection, providing peace of mind for when that impromptu splash in the pool happens.
Also standing the tests of time is the Manufacture Tudor MT5400 caliber, now revealed through an exhibition case back. Built for robustness, reliability and precision, it is also certified as a chronometer (the term for a highly accurate timepiece) by Switzerland’s fully independent COSC institute.
While priced well into the luxury segment – like any solid gold watch –, the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight stands out for a number of notable firsts for the brand, something select collectors will certainly care about well into the future.
The price of the watch is 15.620 €. You'll find more info at tudorwatch.com.
