Vacheron Constantin’s latest exercise in fine watchmaking is worth a closer look.
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon is a stunning piece of fine watchmaking as its 18ct pink gold exterior encapsulates a dark blue lacquered dial. Two years after a stainless steel version, the Overseas Tourbillon ditches its sportier steel-clad aesthetic for a rather more precious 5N pink gold attire.
The Overseas was completely redesigned but a few years ago and has hence debuted a slimmer and yet more refined case, a more precise integration of its trademark Maltese Cross inspired bracelet, as well as a neatly engineered quick strap change system that allows one to conveniently swap between a solid gold bracelet and a rubber strap, depending on the conditions and occasions.
The Calibre 2160 is partially revealed by an opening of the dial at the 6 o’clock position, showcasing the hand-finished tourbillon in operation. This mechanical movement measures just 5.65 millimetres thick and comprises 188 components in total – each finished to outstanding levels of refinement. In such an exercise in fine watchmaking, that so-called finishing entails the gentle application of various surface treatments to every component, including the circular perlage and striped Côtes de Genève on larger plates, brushing on the wheels and their spokes and, of course, the hand-bevelling and polishing of the edges that run around the plates and bridges. Even the screw-heads and their countersinks are polished on a quest to perfection.
The appeal of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon comes from its fantastic combination of a sporty case and bracelet design, placed over a microscopic world of mechanical perfection. That contrast between the inside and outside never fails to be entertaining – and that explains why the Overseas has a special place in the heart of watch collectors the world over.
