Design aficianados rejoice: the world’s largest furniture and design fair is back. After a regrettable cancellation last year, the Salone del Mobile has made a grand return under the fittingly momentous title ‘Supersalone’, once again igniting Italy’s design and fashion capital Milan with a sensational display of thousands of the country’s top designers, from the prestigious to the up-and-coming.
Since 1961, the Salone del Mobile has provided a platform for companies to present their most beguiling, innovative, and skilful creations in the realm of furniture and interior design. This is where the trends of the year emerge in magnificent exhibitions and showrooms alongside live events and discussions. This year curator was architect Stefano Boeri, with sustainability being central topic, with all installations recycled at the conclusion of the fair.
From the milieu of brilliant pieces showcased this year, we picked out a couple of our favourites to bring you a taste of this special comeback.
Round D.154.5 – Molteni&C
Designed in 1954, the Round D.154.5 marked a turning point in the modern furniture design of legendary Milanese architect Gio Ponti, titled after its rounded seat that earned the nickname the ‘soap bar’. Using drawings, photos and period materials, Molteni&C has revived this timeless classic that remains boldly modern, even six decades after its first presentation at the 1957 Milan Triennale.
Velvet – Laboratorio Mattoni
Meet the reimagined kitchen. From the mind of expert craftsman Luca Mattoni, Laboratorio Mattoni transforms traditional concepts into self-sufficient objects of design, a striking centrepiece for any space. Completely customisable in size, finish and material, it’s also equipped with a remote control for effortless use of all its inventive functions.
Stamp Collection – Segis
Clean and elegant lines define the Stamp Collection by Alejandro Valdés: a family of upholstered seats displaying Segis’s characteristic simplicity and levity with reduced environmental impact and no cost to aesthetic value. Versatile in both colour and functionality, these sophisticated, understated selections are suitable furnishing for any interior.
Tetatet – Davide Groppi
No sleeker design could adorn the centre of your dining table, and it’s no surprise coming from master of light Davide Groppi. Attractive while uncomplicated, the flattering luminescence of the Tetatet sets the tone for an atmospheric dining experience, and is in use at leading restaurants around the world. Portable and rechargeable, it’s everything you’d want out of a design.
Ptolomeo Wall – Opinion Ciatti
An eye-catching installation or the intellectual’s dream? From the outside-the-box Opinion Ciatti, Bruno Rainaldi works magic with the Ptolomeo Wall, a column made up of metal C-shaped shelves which disappear once filled with books that seem to levitate up your wall. Its vertical extension serves a practical purpose too, preserving essential space for other furniture pieces.
Circus – Bonaldo
Originally producers of metal bedsteads, the Venetian design firm Bonaldo is consistently and uniquely cutting-edge. Referring to the ‘balancing act’ of the spherical base and the table top, Circus by Fabrice Berrux is an opulent statement piece. Yet with customisable options for both parts, it is also able to integrate harmoniously with the style of its surroundings.
Chaise Longue Rive Gauche – MOMA Design
Modern luxury at its finest. Experts of high-end bathroom furniture made in Milan, MOMA Design pull out all the stops with a recreation of their best-selling freestanding bathtub Chaise Longue Vitre. Gold details and full-length glass sidings take this coveted piece to an even higher level of sublime at-home spa experience.
Circle Lamp – Bontempi Casa
A curvilinear metal rod from a concrete base, this design from the historic family-run Bontempi Casa straddles the line between floor lamp and sculpture. Industrial yet refined, its fluid structure both contrasts and complements the linear contemporary space, while its dimmable LED light imbues a touch of warmth.
Kylindros – Laurameroni
Give your possessions the display they deserve. The award-winning Laurameroni Design Collection, specialists in made-to-measure furniture, have produced an imaginative cylindrical unit with twelve shelves spiralizing up its interior. Four tailored options are available: ‘Golf’ for the sports lover, ‘Coat’ as a walk-in wardrobe, ‘Bar’ as a drinks cabinet, and ‘Show’ for your most cherished treasures.
Vaso Faventia – Liu Jo Living
Ancient materials take contemporary form in these handmade terracotta vases designed by Simone Cagnazzo. Modern lines and warm, alluring colours make each piece both natural and artistic, effortlessly integrating into a wholistic environment in the signature style of Liu Jo Living, enterprisers of the custom-made living room.
Stellar Nebula – Artemide
As ethereal as its name suggests, this trio of suspension lamps combine artisan glassblowing with cutting-edge finishing techniques, based on a design by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) for light design innovators Artemide. Floating delicately in space, the beautiful play between glass and light leaves viewers endlessly enchanted.
