The Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph Returns In Dark Blue

One of the most popular collections of the high-end Saxon watch maker is the Glashütte Original Seventies: much-loved for its retro squared-off look and stunning proportions, it’s here that retro-chic elegance bonds with top-shelf watch making.

The Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph one does have to see in the metal to fully appreciate. It measures 40 by 40 millimetres but, like most square watches, it actually wears slightly larger than that figure would suggest, rather more like a 42 mm round watch. What makes the real difference however is not the elegant size, but rather the way retro meets modern in the confines of this stainless steel case.

Beauty that is refreshing, but not fleeting: that’s the difficult trick the Glashütte Original Seventies perfected with its rounded square shape, neat dial and unique lug structure.

The retro bezel – which enthusiasts lovingly call a “television style” bezel for its shape reminiscent of ‘70s TV sets – has a charm of its own, with its four arched sides flowing into rounded-off corners – all highly polished by the high-end German case manufacture that clearly wants to measure up against its Swiss counterparts. The angled lug structure looks astonishing when combined with any of the four strap options – those are blue Louisiana Alligator, brown calfskin nubuck, black rubber, or an intricately finished stainless steel bracelet with a fine adjustment system built in for easy modulation and enhanced comfort.

What’s new in 2021 for the Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph is its dark blue dial colour, “Galvanic blue” as the brand likes to call it. It’s rich and dark, almost purple at times, and an ideal backdrop against the applied hour markers, the Super-LumiNova luminescent paint over the hands and indices, and the crisp white text everywhere else.

Both the case shape and the dial colour all vary greatly depending on the angle: Glashütte Original operates its own dial manufacture, which explains the brand’s consistency with dial quality and aesthetics.

The Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph in dark blue for 2021 comes with a superb in-house chronograph movement, steel case and four distinctly different strap and bracelet options

“Blue is the new black” in watch design and understandably so: it's noble, yet energetic, entertaining, yet mature — and we love it for all those reasons. If you are looking for something else, the Seventies Chronograph is also available in grey and green.

Through the transparent caseback one gets to appreciate the Glashütte Original Manufactory Calibre 37-02, a high-end, bespoke and modern chronograph movement designed and produced by Glashütte Original – down to the heat-blued screws, no less!

Glashütte Original Seventies
A real watch making powerhouse: the Calibre 37-02 features a 12-hour chronograph, 70-hour power reserve, a column wheel and a self-winding rotor with a 21ct gold oscillation weight – all beautifully finished.

Glashütte Original continues to be a genuine luxury watchmaker doing its own thing in an increasingly rarified fashion: focusing on unique design solutions and merging them with its own – borderline scary – attention to detail. Next time you check one out, take a loupe, go up close and see for yourself.

Ideally suited for those with a distinguished taste and a lasting appetite for special watches, the Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph in dark blue is available from this November at official Glashütte Original dealers around the world.

The price of the watch is 13,200€. More info at glashuette-original.com.
