The OMEGA Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Alinghi is the latest special edition OMEGA watch dedicated to the unique collaboration between the watchmaker and the two-time America’s Cup winning Swiss sailing team.
As explained by Raynald Aeschlimann, President and CEO of OMEGA, “The new watch is about two great Swiss brands combining their passion for innovation and sailing. To match Alinghi’s state-of-the-art boat creation, we’ve harnessed some truly impressive technology, along with the best materials and a very original design concept.”
Connecting the two is “Swiss precision, innovation and pioneering spirit,” more than lofty claims from a brand that has put its watches on the Moon. Speaking of which, this Alinghi edition relies on the Dark Side of the Moon version of the Speedmaster: a high-tech-looking, 44.25mm wide, blacked-out iteration that does remarkably well at spicing up the original’s inspired recipe.
The long, beautifully curved lugs, the “Tachymètre” bezel and triple-sub-dial layout have for long been part of the Speedmaster DNA. Propelling it into the 21st century — and way beyond that — is the ZrO2 highly scratch resistant ceramic case with a space-age kind of deep, glossy, black look that you really have to see to appreciate. The partially skeletonised, blackened dial doubles down on this theme, with its bright red accents adding a touch of racing vibe true to the competitive nature of the Alinghi sailing team that inspired it.
The OMEGA Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Alinghi is powered by OMEGA Calibre 1865, proudly exhibited through the sapphire crystal caseback and the partial openings of the dial. It boasts a main plate and barrel bridge with laser ablated “honeycomb” design, blackened bridges with a laser ablated “carbon” design and the Omega and Speedmaster logos also attained through laser ablation.
All this high-tech dial-making is counterbalanced by the Moonwatch-style hands, as OMEGA calls them, with white and red varnished chronograph and small-seconds hands. The 12-hour recorder just above the 6 o’clock position of the dial is in aluminium to reduce its weight, with the Alinghi logo transferred in red over its blackened base for a truly bespoke touch.
From the Moon to the open seas, the Speedmaster collection sees the addition of an exciting new reference that comes with a special presentation box and a 5-year warranty to truly make it the complete package.
