Where Art Meets Food – The Ruinart Right Here, Right Now Pop-Up Restaurant in Berlin

On the 29th and 30th April, the Maison Ruinart will host an exclusive pop-up restaurant in Berlin called Right Here, Right Now.

In collaboration with artist Jeppe Hein and star chef Björn Swanson, a four-course menu will be served amidst interactive artwork created by Hein and inspired by Ruinart itself. Tickets for this gastronomic experience are available here. The event kicks off in Jeppe Hein’s gallery where you can peruse his specially created Ruinart Artwork. Afterwards, a shuttle will transport you to the pop-up restaurant to sample Björn Swanson's culinary delights.

Since 2008, Ruinart has invited internationally acclaimed artists to collaborate with their brand and, using art, visualise their interpretation of what Ruinart means to them. Coined as giving the artists “Carte Blanche”, many famous artists have collaborated with them in the past, including Jaume Plensa, Liu Bolin, David Shrigley and Vik Muniz. Each artwork produced shares Ruinart’s values and pays particular homage to raising awareness about climate change. This year’s Ruinart Carte Blanche is awarded to internationally renowned artist Jeppe Hein. Together with chef and culinary artist Björn Swanson, Ruinart and Hein created an interactive experience combining art with food in the form of the Right Here, Right Now pop-up restaurant on the 29th and 30th April.

The great Artist behind the Collaboration

Born and raised in Denmark, Jeppe Hein’s love of nature began during his childhood. Growing up on an organic farm, Hein fondly remembers life in the open air, fields as far as the eye can see and the sound of the ocean in the far distance. Seeing the countryside as his true home, he often returns to recharge and renew his soul. This love for nature has spilled into his adult life as he now lives nestled alongside the Grunewald Forest, just south of Berlin.

He says, “when I open the (studio) doors, I am face to face with the forest”. Finding success internationally in 2002, Hein is renowned for his interactive works which aim to engage, inspire and surprise people. He has since gone on to win the ARS FENNICA Award in 2013 and the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsens Award in 2018.

The Inspiration for the Right Here Right Now Pop-Up Restaurant

For Jeppe Hein, the vineyards were an eye-opening and inspiring experience. From the scent of the flowers to the tingling of little bubbles in your mouth, champagne is a total sensory journey. It’s this sensory experience that Hein wants to convey with his Ruinart-inspired installation, focusing on the four elements; earth/soil, air/wind, water/rain and fire/sun, and encouraging us to use all five senses; sight, hear, taste, touch and smell.

Held at Ruinart’s exclusive pop-up restaurant Right Here, Right Now on the 29th and 30th of April, diners will be encouraged to interact with the artwork whilst enjoying a 4-course meal, paired with Ruinart Champagne. The menu has been designed by star chef Björn Swanson, Owner of the Berlin restaurant Faelt. Each course has been carefully designed to combine art with gastronomy, taking inspiration from the champagne house itself. Tickets are available at 275 euros, to book click here:

When speaking on the Right Here, Right Now concept, Hein was clear that this was an experiment with intention. “I want to give people an experience that they are not used to at an art fair. Because normally, you look, buy and sell. It’s all about accumulating, taking and giving. I would like to provide a moment for small sensations and experiences. You put your arm into the mirror foil, it disappears inside, and you take something out. Just doing this will already take people out of their comfort zone.”
